Quotes:

  • The early 20th Century Irish dramatist, critic and social reformer George Bernard Shaw said: “This is the true joy in life:  The being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one.  The being a force of nature, instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making me happy.  I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.  I rejoice in life for its own sake.  Life is no “brief candle” to me; it is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”
  • Surgeon Dr. Bernie Siegel in Love, Medicine & Miracles said:
“In a life out of harmony with itself, events seem to conspire to go wrong but by the same token they mesh wondrously when you start to live your bliss.  Perhaps this is another way of saying you create your own opportunities out of the same raw materials from which other people create their defeats.”
  • And the 20th Century American philosopher Wayne Dyer said:
“Above all else, never aim low or think small.  You are a divine manifestation of God, and in that regard you are connected to that which causes and creates miracles.  So stop focusing on what you don’t have, and shift your consciousness to an appreciation for all you are and all that you do have.”
  • From Bruce:
“Remember, you can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf! I wish you all the best and I hope you believe me when I say first and always, it’s about gratitude.”

Books:

  • A Spirituality of Fundraising - Workbook Edition by Henri J. M. Nouwen
Suggestion: Either of these versions are great providers of inspiration and grounding for your giving messages. His original book is small (64 pages) and some congregations have made books available for their entire congregations. The workbook provides a 4 week guide and is especially helpful for your stewardship team, council or other leadership groups to 'listen, journal, pray, act' on the spiritual foundation of invitation to our congregations to give.
