Congregational Ministries Committee

Per the RMS constitution

a. Recognizing that the church is always being reformed, the Congregational Ministries Committee gives ear to the Holy Spirit to determine ways to invite and equip congregations to effectively and creatively participate in God’s mission in their diverse contexts. The Congregational Ministries Committee will relate to the Synod Council and collaborate with other synod ministries as well as churchwide ministries as appropriate.

b. The Congregational Ministries Committee will have at least six members either elected by the Synod Assembly or appointed by the Synod Council for four-year terms, ideally staggered among the members. Attention will be given to inviting a diversity of perspective and gifts.

The landscape of congregations and leadership has shifted dramatically, especially post-pandemic. While there is a shortage of pastors and deacons the fact is many congregations are unable to afford full-time or even part-time leaders.

Despite these challenges, congregations are innovating. Lay leaders are stepping up to roles traditionally held by rostered leaders, and brave experiments are underway to meet the needs of our communities.

Join us at the winter 2025 Brave Experiments event to hear from Bishop Meghan and three congregations pioneering lay pastoral leadership. We'll discuss training, partnerships, and how these changes are being received. Together, we'll explore what works, what doesn't, and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit for the future.

Why Church

In Lent of 2024 the committee created a Lenten program to help congregations discern their 'why' in an ever changing culture. Copies can be downloaded for free here.

Brave Experiments

In the fall of 2023 a panel from across the synod shared their ministry experiments and what they had learned. The event recording is provided on this page.
